I remove the x-clamps. The x-clamps are what hold your two heatsinks in place over your CPU and GPU chips. I then remove the cheap, dried thermal compound that Microsoft uses off the CPU and GPU chips as well as the heat sinks. I replace it with higher quality thermal compound and re-attach the heat sinks with exact fit screws and washers. The exact fit screws and washers allow the heat sinks to sit better over the CPU and GPU than the x-clamps. All that is needed after the heat sinks are sitting firmly back in place is to overheat the system so the fresh thermal compound can solder between the chip and the heat sinks.
